Belgian model Hanne Gaby Odiele is one of my current model crushes. I love the ease that she portrays in everything she’s in. She’s been walking the runways of almost every major designer and appearing in so many inspiring editorials. The one above is one of my favs from Dazed and Confused. She seems to have a sort of 90s DIY spirit about her, so perfect to profile her for today’s post!

Each time we release a new editorial I’m instantly excited all over again. I think it’s the idea of everything coming together as a team when we plan each story out. For this shoot we had some great pieces from Hardware LDN, a new streetwear line out of yep, you guessed it London. Paired with some pieces from a local boutique here in LA, Haus of Love  this is one of my favorites to shoot so far.

I really wanted to capture the energy of attraction and how it plays out in different environments. From indoors to out exploring the city. Jacob, who does production here, coupled with Michele let the walls down and we are spectators in their world.

Time to add another 90s heartthrob to my list, Nick Stahl.  He first started as a child actor in ’93 when he appeared in “The Man Without a Face”, however I first discovered him in the late 90s. It was a movie called “Disturbing Behavior” with Katie Holmes and James Marsden. Basically a teen thriller where all the teens in this town start to turn into “goody too shoes”  for lack of a better term. Trust me, it’s better than it sounds. After that he was in an MTV movie called “Wasted”, “Twist”, and Larry Clark’s “Bully” earned him some critical acclaim. I’ve always loved his choice of roles and I always look forward to his new projects.

Recently he’s struggled with some drug and alcohol abuse but it seems now that he is back on track and has a few projects to be released this year. Can’t wait.

There is something comforting about being in the woods. I always seem to find my footing when surrounded by lush green textures. Maybe it’s the prospect of being lost and then finding your way back that attracts me to areas of nature’s architecture. Strange to think that the very first fashion grunge editorial was set in the woods. It might just be time to go back.

Swedish blogger Emelie Eng is pretty much one of the coolest chicks ever. Not only does she live in Sweden (where I’m dying to go), but she also influenced by the heavy metal scene in Stockholm. Awesome. Her blog, Billy Tilly is one of my go-to bookmarks when looking for outfit inspiration. You’ll fall in love with her style too. I’m sure.

Just the other week on VH1 I was watching a documentary asking the question whether ‘grunge’ belongs in the evolution of metal? In the end it was decided that it had absolutely nothing to do with metal but was more of a reaction to the genre itself. Still however it produced a badass subculture that I just love.

Nothing looks worse than a greasy crayon, especially when your a walking study like Courtney Love. Her look of bleached out hair, bright red lips, and dark eyeliner has been in and out of trend for a decade. Its unique, and sexy. Mysteriously makes people wonder if your a celebrity, when you really want to look cool, dress like Courtney.

This Hole celebrity has been muse to many fashion designer’s throughout the years landing the most major campaign with Heidi Slimane’s new Saint Laurent ads titled, ”The Saint Laurent Music Project.” 90′s inspired fall collection is major. She is not wearing her baby doll dresses, she seems over the Grunge Glamour, not Heroin chic, but just chic.

She loves vintage clothing, dated back to 1929, cutting up clothes and making something else. Influenced by Rodarte, Prada suits, and classic Saint Laurent.

She loves a really theatrical red look, oxblood, maroon, and deep brown reds.

Create a customized cheek look—from matte to highlighted—by blending on the range of shades in this limited-edition palette, which includes NARS’ iconic Orgasm in addition to pink, peach and gold tones.

NARS Foreplay Palette, also try the NARS red lip liner in Velvet Rope. My favorite red lipstick right now is Mac Russian Red. Its amazing with the NARS lip liner. Exfoliate your lips first with Fresh Brown sugar lip scrub. That way you will have a velvety creamy lip.  Have concealer handy to fix and smudges after you apply it on after and make sure to have your face flawless.

Blush not bronzer. Get rid of bronzer, along with the flat iron, it wasn’t out yet. Think Courtney Love, not tan mom.

Dragon eye, fast trick, get an eyeliner that doesn’t smudge. Eyeliners are tricky. I don’t like to mess with the liquid liner, its to risky. If I make a mistake in the morning, I don’t have time to wash my whole face and start over. I suggest MAC kohl eyeliner. Unline some black eyeliner, the color stays noir, not turning to charcoal like the others. Finish with Benefit Rebel mascara.How to apply your eyeliner.

Start off by softly dotting and smearing the eyeliner on the top lash lines from the tear ducts all the way to the outer corners of the eyes. He then goes back over his work to thicken the line. I personally only do my bottom lash, top lash is dated, but here are a few helpful tips on application;

 Top Lash:

The trick is to get as close to the lash line as possible. Not only will this make the lashes look more lush, but it will also accentuate what you already have, thicker in the middle, and thickest of all at the ends. You want to sweep your eyeliner on gracefully. Blend, blend, blend, and smudge.

Bottom Lash:

And as for those bottom lash lines: It should never be as dark or as thick as the top, Brett advises. For the bottom, lightly dab on a small amount for just a touch of definition. Stay on the lines, don’t create new lines. You don’t want to look like something that rhymes with Manny. Come on now!

Oxblood red for fashion may be last season, but it never goes out for eyeliner. Try Mac eyeliner Teddy. Its a red-brown, making hazel, and brown eyes pop.

Ratchet doesn’t hold a candle to this 90′s punk rock princess. Courtney slowly turned out grunge glamour, and is now the face for the most major campaigns. You know you want to have that face.

A few weeks ago I found this great 90s flick on Netflix called “Love and a .45″ . Think of it as a “Bonnie & Clyde” type vibe but set in the 90s with a bit more edge. I was instantly excited that Rory Cochrane was in this film along side Renee Zellweger, they both starred in Empire Record just the next year. However, one of the standout stars is Gil Bellows, who plays the “Clyde” to Renee’s “Bonnie”. The overall look and feel to this film is what I really miss about 90s indie cinema. There were no digital recordings and videos and the whole era had a sort of distorted, and almost “real life” quality about it. It’s streaming on Netflix right now and it definitely deserves a good chance.

Ready for another exclusive editorial?! It’s officially summer here in LA. The temperatures are steadily rising and you can feel the earth crack from the heat.
