Throwback Thursday: The Mini-Backpack

There are some trends that we wished never happened. Some of them we try to forget. Now, I know some people are torn over whether or not they liked the mini-backpack trend but I for one really loved  it. In true 90s revival fashion lately they have begun to make their rounds back into our “vintage” inspired closets. I specifically remember buying one at the mall in 7th grade and I couldn’t wait to debut my new treasure the next day in school. Backpacks have become to make their way out of the shadows but none will capture our hearts quite like the mini-backpack.

Let’s appreciate mini-backpacks from the 90s and welcome them back into our lives with open arms.

i had one just like this.

90s Movie Style Crush: Gregg Araki’s “Nowhere”

Now, I’m very aware that I have a strange and often pretty out there taste in films. While its true that I worship the style and overall vibe of the 90s every waking moment I’m alive, I’m also drawn to campy movies about various subcultures. I think I have  seen the movie “Nowhere” about 100 times and each time I love it even more.

I first remember renting it in high school from my local video store yes, video store as in VHS. Unfortunately, the movie never came out on DVD but just recently it has been uploaded on YouTube. A complete all-star 90s cast mixed with an acid trip, “Nowhere”  brings all the candy and grunge kids together in one 90 minute visual romp.

here is the link to the Nowhere on YouTube (its very NSFW just so you know)

90s Style File: D’arcy Wretzky of the Smashing Pumpkins

As most of you know Smashing Pumpkins is my second favorite band. I felt it was only time to talk about one of my personal fashion icons from the  band. D’arcy Wretzky was just it in the 90s. She was the bassist for the Smashing Pumpkins and seriously the reason that I wore silver nail polish and wanted to play the bass guitar. One of the things that I really love about her style is her ability to be candy colored alt grunge in the mid 90s to this goth grunge look for the Adore album.

My favorite D’arcy look would have to be the “Today” video from the Smashing Pumpkins. Give me a pair of mechanics pants and put my hair in pigtails this summer.

Man, can’t we all just start dressing like this again?  I personally want to be Dionne from Clueless mixed with a little Kim Gordon.

Ahh Shirley Manson too!

Youth.

photo of Harmony Korine

I am deeply obsessed with youth culture. That is probably why Larry Clark and Harmony Korine (the writer of the film “Kids”) are some of my greatest influences.

Throwback Thursday: Manic Panic Hair Color

When I was in junior high school if you wanted colored hair you used Manic Panic. I’m now many years older and you still use Manic Panic hair color. As most people know the colored hair trend has been going on pretty strong the last few years. Tumblr is probably a reason for that. It seems that nowadays my dashboard is flooded with all sorts of hair colors in the rainbow.

I’ve compiled a few images that take me back to the days where one of your friends was dyeing their hair in the bathroom after school. Some are from the 90s but others are an updated take on the resurgence.

May and the start of Summer is Here!

Thank goodness it’s May which means the start of summer in my book. Even though LA does have amazing weather all year long here is something about the summer that gets the city buzzin.

Keeping in mind with buzzin, Nasty Gal time and time again just puts out awesome and inspiring ish. Spikes, crochet, and denim stay the focus in this preview. Also, reminds me that I need a new pair of shades. If you don’t know about their awesome lookbooks then check out this behind the scenes look at their new one for May.

A Milestone…and a new video!

It’s been almost 2 years since we got the idea to start shooting editorials connected with the blog. Last week we wrapped up our 10th in the series. To say this is a milestone for the blog would be an understatement.

Our initial inspiration was the aesthetic of the”We Found Love” video by Rihanna mixed with the movie “Kids”. We had so much fun shooting this video. With pieces from Rik Villa and Skinny Bitch Apparel, this was one of the most fun days we’ve had so far. Oh, and don’t mind my little interview, I’m incredibly awkward in front of a camera.

Hope you enjoy! The photos premiere on Tuesday!

Throwback Thursday: Lisa Frank

When I was in the fourth grade I started my very own Lisa Frank club at school. If you don’t remember Lisa Frank stationery, it was all the rage in the 90s and it’s still going strong now. I had stickers, folders, notebooks and tons of other pointless things that I wish I had now. If I ever find out who threw those away…

I had no idea at the time but now that I look at the designs they remind me of some strange acid trip or an art installation at Burning Man.

Which I guess is pretty much the same thing.

Brain Waves…

Being sick does have it’s advantages. It’s hard to tell what those are at the moment when I’m drowning myself in cold medicine, but I have been having weirder dreams which leads me into more shoot ideas coming up.

I had an awesome surprise party on Monday for my birthday which I have never had before. It involved me being blindfolded with a bra in the back of a car and being taken to one of my favorite bars, Loaded on Hollywood Blvd. One of the best yet.

Anywhoo…it’s visual stimulation time while I edit the photos from the last shoot and prepare a truly awesome Throwback Thursday for tomorrow.
