Throwback Thursday: The Adventures of Pete and Pete

Who doesn’t love two red headed brothers getting into adventures for 30 mins on TV? I know in the 90s I did. Back in the day when Nickelodeon had SNICK this was one of my favorite shows. Let’s also not forget about the fact that they had an awesome theme song and the youngest brother had a tattoo named “Petunia”.

Bad effing ass.  My favorite episode is when little Pete heard his favorite song and tried to recreate it by forming his own band.

What’s yours?

Menswear Monday: Ryan McGinley

When I first started to study photography there were three photographers that I drew inspiration from. Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin, and Ryan McGinley. I think I really responded to his skate street type style that closely mirrors the 90s. This even holds true in his work today. Being one of the youngest photographers to have an exhibition at Whitney Museum, he really taught me a lot about the lo-fi photography scene, whether he knows it or not.

Perfect choice for a Menswear Monday I think…

Menswear Monday: Ethan Embry

When I think of the 90s I think of heart throbs, naturally. Many of my early teenage years were spent watching movies, talking on the phone til all hours and generally being boy crazy.

When I first saw Empire Records it was a tie between A.J. and Mark for who was the most adorable. Ethan Embry played Mark, a wide eyed stoner who coined the term “Damn the Man, Save the Empire!”. That’s ultimately what made him my favorite character. After Empire he was one of the leads in “Can’t Hardly Wait” and he was equally as adorable. From his stoner style in Empire to his nerdy-chic getups in Can’t Hardly Wait, he was the original Seth Cohen from “The O.C.”.

Thanks Ethan for being the nerd of the 90s.

Sunday Style: Rita Ora

Lately I’ve been super inspired by Rita Ora’s style. Born in Kosovo and raised in London, she just recently signed to Roc Nation to make her first album.  She has such an awesome eclectic style pulling roots from 80s hip hop, grunge and even the pin up girl style.

I think she is going to be my style inspiration for the summer.

basically I’m just jealous that she’s with Drake in this one.

When You Got a Clean Smile, You Can Walk with Style…

In my life there are so many different obstacles and challenges that I come across.   Tumblr is one of the greatest inspiration sites for me. It’s very different from many of the other social media sites that are around now. Lately, because of my job I feel like I’m always connected to the web in some way or another. One of my best friends Chris Lai, is here from NYC and it’s always great to have a piece of home here because it inspires me in a completely different way. In keeping with the theme of inspiration, here is a mix of images that I’m currently crushing on via my tumblr dashboard.

On the Edge…

I’m trying to fit this post in before the clock turns 12 and it’s time for a ‘Throwback Thursday”. I realized that last Sunday I didn’t post my usual crop of inspiration so here it goes…

Bookshelf: Not in Fashion by Mark Borthwick

I have a lot of books. There I said it. That’s nothing I plan on remedying  anytime soon. Lately, I’ve been flipping through “Not in Fashion” by Mark Borthwick  whenever I find a free minute. I have another shoot coming up on Sunday so I have been finding inspiration in what I have around.

There is something about fashion photography that switched in the 90s. Gone were the days of over produced sets and glossy edge. Since the alternative and grunge revolution was born, the art evolved with it. Then photographers like Terry Richardson came on the scene who totally changed the way fashion photography is seen today. Mark Borthwick uses this look effortlessly. I love the indie, lo-fi look of the hazy Holga type shots that grace the pages of magazines like Lula, Indie, and i-D.

Brighter Daze from LF…

Well, its almost that magical time of year, summer. Being in California people naturally assume that it’s always summer. Not true. Just so happens its pretty chilly right now. However, there is always something that changes in L.A. over the summer. Almost like the weather flipped a switch and overnight it turns into this magical land where the breezes are abundant and the music is blarin with the top down.

This season LF brought us one of the most summer driven lookbooks ever. The 90s are still around going strong and this season it looks like Cher Horowitz took some acid.

And I love it.

Menswear Monday: Layering and Long Johns

In the grunge scene long johns were a necessity if you were living in the Pacific Northwest. At first it was for keeping warm , after that it became a fashion trend associated with the music scene. It’s hard to dig up some photos on the long johns under torn jeans trend but basic layering is key. Especially with a flannel.

Take a look at some of my favorite displays of the trend now and then…
