Black, White and Grai all over…

So, a few weeks ago I received an email from a reader who wanted to tell me about a new designer. Since most people know that I am more than a fan of Rick Owens so I was more than excited to hear that she was a former protege of Rick Owens. Maya Yogev created Grai in 2006 and currently based in Los Angeles. She draws much of her inspiration from mythology and avant garde art.

I was blown away by the elegance of this fairly new collection. The Spring Summer 2009 collection is very much influenced by Greek mythology with a bit of a Victorian twist. The line has been seen on celebrities and red carpets alike. While most people will just think this is another Rick Owens wannabe, I happen to think that the twist that she puts on this avant garde style goes far beyond a copy cat.

90s Grunge Icon: Drew Barrymore

90s wild child Drew Barrymore has always embodied the grunge style and attitude. Whether its her notorious childhood and struggles, she has always nailed her own personal style. Here are some photo flashbacks to the good ol days…

“The Doom Generation” Rose McGowan Style

doomgen1

So, just the other night at 2 am I rewatched another one of my favorite indie cult classics, Doom Generation. It is directed by Gregg Araki who is notoriously makes movies that look like a bad acid trip but I happen to love his exciting take on the world of seedy LA subculture in the 90s.

Rose McGowan stars in one of her first starring roles as Amy Blue, one seriously f-ed up girl with a weird asexual boyfriend and killer fashion sense. While going on a crazy crime spree all around the Valley with her boyfriend and a mysterious drifter named X she looks like a crazy drugged out Bettie Page.

“Suburbs + Utopia = Suburbia”

thumbnail

So, after many recommendations I just finished watching the classic 1984 punk film “Suburbia”. I am always on the lookout for finding new ways to inspire my life. While my blog title is “grunge” I thought it would be nice to write about other things that I find interesting. Subcultures have always been a huge fascination of mine. Finding out what drives people to create their own “familes” and bond together through common interests. The director, Penelope Spheeris decided to cast real punk kids from the LA area to give it an extra edge of authenticity.

While I couldn’t find too many images on the web from this film, I highly recommend it.
