Throwback Thursday: Top 10 90s Movie Soundtracks

Incidentally I have never written a post on my favorite movie soundtracks.Bah, crazy right?! All of these are also some of the best movies ever but even better, they have amazing music to go with them. Now these are not in ranking order because to ask me to do that would drive me to a near stroke. Think of them all in a straight line together.

1. Dazed and Confused, Even More Dazed and Confused, 1993

Ok I had to put these two first. Dazed and Confused which was released in ’93 is still one of my favorite movies ever. These albums definitely contributed to my exploration of classic rock when I was in high school. I think “Slow Ride” by Foghat just might have to be played at my funeral. Featured artists; ZZ Top, Black Sabbath, The Edgar Winter Group, Peter Frampton, etc…

2. Reality Bites, 1994

I think I learned all the words to Lisa Loeb’s “Stay” because of this movie. If any of you seriously feel like you live this movie then this is the soundtrack for you. This one still makes it on almost every mix I make on my iPod.

3. KIDS, 1995

While the movie Kids is unforgettable some people often forget that there was a soundtrack released. Now, it’s long out of print and rather hard to find but you can find the songs individually online out there. I definitely credit this soundtrack for my introduction into the amazing world of Daniel Johnston.

4. The Craft, 1996

Just look at that cover. And that list of artists. My personal favorite on this album has to be Letters to Cleo “Dangerous Type”. An ultimate girl rock anthem if I’ve ever heard one.

5. Trainspotting, 1996

I simply love when movies release two volumes of soundtracks. Trainspotting is such a stellar film with an incredible brit-pop soundtrack. Notable mention: Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day” is def one of the highlights.

6. Singles, 1992

This wouldn’t be a grunge based blog without the “Singles ” soundtrack on here. One of the best rom coms ever centered around the Seattle scene in the early 90s and with the best music you could ever imagine. Artists include Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, and Chris Cornell.

7. The Doom Generation, 1995

What do you get when you mix an underground industrial soundtrack with a Gregg Araki movie? This is what you get. It’s a little hard to find now but try to track it down for some awesome tunes by Medicine, Curve, and Jesus and Mary Chain.

8. Romeo + Juliet, 1996

This film defined by junior high years and so did the soundtrack. It’s an alternative rock fans dream with music from Everclear, Radiohead, and The Cardigans. There was a Vol. 2 of the series but it mostly included instrumentals so I opted to leave it off this one.

9. Clueless, 1995

The film that defined the mid to late 90s generation. Aside from being able to recite this film by heart, I also am transported back to each scene in the film when I hear this soundtrack. It’s worth it alone just for “Supermodel” by Jill Sobule.

10. Empire Records, 1995

Last but certainly not least, Empire Records. Now, this definitely is one of those movies that you wish had a volume two. Mostly because all of the memorable tracks are left off the album. It does however have “Till I Hear It From You” by the Gin Blossoms and “Sugar High” sans Gina unfortunately.
