To quote the infamous Huey Lewis and the News, it really is hip to be square. Well, in Michael Pitt’s case. He was chosen to be the new campaign model for Prada’s spring menswear season. Inspired by the 50s, Pitt shines in the designers new duds for spring.
Now I know it isn’t Monday but we can bend the rules a bit. Especially for Michael Pitt.
Danish model Freja Beha was one of the first models that I featured on the blog almost three years ago. Whew! I can’t believe it has been that long since I’ve mentioned her and she still inspires me to this day. Her androgynous look has remained a staple in her aesthetic and I simply just love her delicate tattoos and ability to transform in every photoshoot.
Who am I kidding? She might just be runner up for my favorite model behind Erin Wasson.
This past weekend I had a rock doc party with my friend at my half set up new apartment. We watched the Sex Pistols film, “The Filth and the Fury” and I gained a whole new set of ideas from it. I have seen numerous punk documentaries that mention and touch on the Sex Pistols, but never a whole film dedicated to it.
John Lydon, more commonly known as Johnny Rotten was the lead singer and frontman for the Pistols. The bands fashion sense came about more as an accident, because of their necessity for safety pins as a use for keeping their clothes together. Once this was photographed and seen all over the world it became a staple in the punk scene for a lot of bands.
I love this period in music that spawned a fashion sense that is still relevant today. Check out the tattered layers and metal bondage accents that still appear the runways of brand like Balmain almost every season.
Yes, I had to use a Clueless quote to title this post. Skateboarding is something that I have always loved from afar. Aside from a few embarrassing tumbles I’ve had attempting this, I love the visual aspect that goes along with it. There was that time in the 90s when the skateboard culture had a major influence in fashion trends. Yes, I too am guilty of shopping at Pacific Sunwear in the local mall, and wearing Jnco jeans.
Here are some 90s inspired skate photographs that sometimes blend the line of what is 90s and what is present day. Not too much has changed.
Who would have ever predicted that 15 years ago the grungy girl from “Hackers” would become one of the most inspiring people in Hollywood? From her out there attitude to her random rumors, she has always been one of my favorite icons.
I tried to gather some inspirational photos of her in the 90s to show my love on this Friday morning.
How fully awesome is this polaroid? 90s in a nutshell.
Both of them in Girl, Interrupted is pretty much the best thing ever.
I loved when she was married to Johnny Lee Miller…
Sometimes I have writers block. As you can tell from my long lapses in posts at times. Today on the walk to work I was listening to a collection of Nirvana b-sides. Until now I never realized how much I love b-sides in general. My favorite is the song “verse chorus verse”, recorded during the In Utero days but the song was left off the album.
A few weeks ago one of my readers suggested that I feature Chris Cornell for my Monday installment. We must have been on the same wavelength, because I was drafting up this very post.
Chris Cornell, famous for fronting 90s grunge band Soundgarden has been one of the biggest grunge icons since the 90s. After Soundgarden went on hiatus he formed rock supergroup Audioslave, also another kick ass formation.
Let’s take a journey back to the Pacific Northwest and see why Cornell’s dreamy eyes and badass style makes him just as relevant now as he was 20 years ago.
Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder during their Temple of the Dog days…( video below)
here is one of my favorite Soundgarden videos: “Rusty Cage”
and here is one of my favorite songs of all time by Temple of the Dog; grunge supergroup including Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, and then unknown vocalist Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam.
