Just a few weeks ago I was doing my usual browse around the Netflix streaming app, which is as routine as brushing my teeth at this point and I found the indie gem, Little Birds. The film was released in 2012 with great reviews from the Sundance film festival and other national press outlets.
I’m so glad that I decided to take a chance because it’s easily one of the best films I’ve seen this year. The story follows two girls living in the Salton Sea out in the California desert. Completely bored with their lives and lack of excitement, upon meeting a few skaters from LA they take a chance and road trip to the East side of Los Angeles. Later in the story the girls find the guys, and the first feeling of being completely on your own run throughout their tale.
Another point to highlight would be the main star Juno Temple. Her presence is magnetic and the girls’ style reminds me much of my own when I was in high school. Even now I always find comfort in knowing that in this digital age there are still films that separate from the “mainstream” and follow the hidden subcultures and small desert towns as if nothing as changed.
