If you haven’t seen the documentary of one of the most important two week tours in alternative rock history, then you are severely missing out.
(future update: We covered this film on the Fashion Grunge Podcast in 2020)
1991: The Year Punk Broke is filmmakers David Markey’s two week journey on the Sonic Youth European tour of 1991. This now infamous tour included Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr, Babes in Toyland, Gumball, and The Ramones. While it does focus on the show, the connection between the bands is really one of the most amazing aspects of the documentary. Being behind the scenes on a show like this really is one of my dreams in life.
this film also includes one of my favorite renditions of “Freak Scene” by Dinosaur Jr.
