Have you ever watched a film really late at night that you never expected to hit you? And by hit you I mean essentially mirror your life and give you so much to think about at the same time. That’s what happened when I saw the film I Believe in Unicorns one night on Netflix.
Directed by Leah Meyerhoff the story follows a young girl named Davina in her pastel fantasy soaked intervals of daydreaming and the introduction of her first love or infatuation. In many ways she’s the typical girl who wants to run away and experience this complete takeover that infatuation brings when you first meet someone. From my own experiences in the past few years this film almost seemed to mirror. The director really captures the spirit of being a teenage girl in this model world including splices of rich cinematography, light leaks, and whimsical stop motion. One of the more underrated aspects of living in your own world.
