I think I was first introduced to Angelina Jolie in the mid 90s. It was the film Hackers and I thought she was literally the fucking coolest girl ever. However, it was a late night at a friends house in junior high when I saw the film Gia that totally changed my opinion on her as an actress.
(future update: We covered this film on the Fashion Grunge Podcast in 2020)
Gia (1998) is a tv film about the life of supermodel Gia Carangi. Born in Philadelphia in 1960 she was fascinated with David Bowie and his glam fashion sense and lifestyle. After appearing in several newspapers in her hometown, she moved to New York when she was 17. She signed with Wilhelmina and quickly became one of the most in demand models. She had a super edgy style and was able to transform into so many different personalities.
Gia spiraled downwards into the world of drugs and depression that tragically led to her death at age 26. Angelina portrays her in such a delicate soul but with this immense passion that never left her spirit.
