About a year ago I discovered the ‘bubble grunge’ power pop trio Expert Timing. This is how they describe the band and I have to say while it may be an entire new genre, it perfectly explains their music to a tee. Just on the heels of releasing their LP, Glare I talked to Katrina from the band about how the new record came to be.
How did the band get together?Jeff and I have been together a long time but only playing music together for a few years. Our first band together (and my first band ever) sort of fell apart cause a member moved away to the west coast. Jeff and I knew that we needed to keep doing this and so Expert Timing was born. We started out with our friend Tim McGowan on drums, and then when he moved away we luckily found Gibran to take his place. It’s been an amazing experience so far, I feel like we’ve all grown a lot as musicians and people together and I’m so thankful for it.
What music genre influenced or inspired your sound?
There’s not necessarily a specific genre that has influenced us, but several bands like That Dog, Dinosaur Jr, and Juliana Hatfield have definitely inspired us. Honestly we really love anything with big guitars and catchy choruses.
How does this new record differ from your previous releases?
The EP that we released last year was really the beginning of Jeff and I figuring out how to write and record music together. For this new record, we worked hard to try and push ourselves further and explore new possibilities as far as harmonies and melodies.
What are you most excited about on the new album?
Honestly we’re just excited to have an actual full length record! Haha We started this band with zero expectations and are just so proud of the progress we’ve made and the songs we’ve written.
Are there any particular events or themes that shaped the new record?
Glare really acts as a window into the last two years of our lives. We’ve faced a lot of loss and went through periods of depression and grieving juxtaposed against some really positive, inspiring things that have also happened. The track order for the record is deliberate, we really wanted the mood shifts to be felt.
Where are you most excited about about playing on your upcoming tour? What is your fav city you’ve played so far?
We’re excited to be playing in the Lehigh Valley area (11/23) where Jeff grew up! Carly of Slingshot Dakota will be playing with us and it’ll be so fun to get to reconnect with a bunch of friends we haven’t seen in a while. Favorite city we’ve played so far would probably be Chicago. We have a lot of friends that have moved there in the last few years, it’s a really cool city!
Check them out on tour in November in the East of the US!
