Lovers is a photographic series that I worked on in response to Sarah Bahbah’s storytelling visuals with Noah Centineo, called ‘Dear Love’. With being inspired by her literature, I worked with poet Charlotte Smith who contributed and constructed the beautiful poem to go alongside my images. This allowed series which had a conservation with hers, allowing a connection between two lovers.
Poem:
We dreamt that we were lovers.
Perhaps that’s all it ever was. A dream.
You told me that I was fire and you were water.
Maybe that’s why I always felt like I was out of my element.
[Remembers a memory she thought she had forgotten.]
-I wanted to tell you the night you left.
-Tell me what?
If I couldn’t say it then, what makes you think I can say it now.
I should have never called so late; I know that.
Is this not how you pictured me in your dream?
You look at me now like I’m from another planet.
And all this time I thought that we were made from the same star.
Within the story, I was inspired to create dream-like imagery using ambient and repetitive pink LED lights throughout to enhance this sense of intimacy and romance between the two. Carrying this series out within Paige Spicer’s bedroom allowed a personal touch, creating some form of humanity yet still questioning the fantasy itself.
Fairy lights were chosen to replicate the stars and the constellation between two crossed lovers, who may or may not have already crossed paths.
