My whole project is mainly inspired by the Voguing subculture, a cultural movement rooted in the fight against oppression, racism, and homophobia.
By the ‘60s, Ballroom culture was in full effect, and collective “houses” formed to create a safe place and family structure for young queer kids who were often rejected by their biological families and were essentially homeless.
What I would like to communicate is the victory of the individual who has fought against the prejudices of society that avoided him/her from being himself/herself.
Consequently the “rebirth” of this person who can finally be himself/herself. Thanks to the sub-culture of Voguing and thanks to the Ballroom, the person can feel at “home” in his/her body and mind. In fact, the groups of individuals who challenged each other were called “house” headed by the “mothers”, thus creating a disarming affection between themselves, helping each other to overcome health and economic difficulties and so on. Such as a real family.
