The development of youth culture is something that that has interested me for as long as I can remember. A few months ago I got an email from a fan of the blog, fashion photographer Amber Asaly. As soon as I checked out her work I was excited and amazed. The 21 year old Orange County, California native has a photography style much like my own, probably why I was instantly drawn to it. We’ve been trying to set up a collaboration project for a while so keep your eyes peeled for something in the future!
Now she is based in San Francisco and I had the opportunity to interview her for the blog.
I’m sure you will fall in love with her work as much as I have…
L: When did photography first inspire you?
AA: Ever since I started shooting with my first 35mm camera. It was literally like I could view the world differently, more beautifully. I’ve always had a strong love for photography.
L: I feel like you’re work has a cinematic quality to it? Are you inspired by films?
AA:I love British films, I remember the first time I watched This Is England I wanted to do a super punk, skinhead shoot. But films in general, I’d say yes some of my inspirations feeds off of old films. Too be honest though, I’m easily inspired. The city I live in especially is a great contribution to my inspiration.
L: Do you have a production process when prepping for a shoot or do you like to keep things spontaneous?
AA: I really try and stay away from huge productions for shoots, it stresses everyone out and puts a certain expectation in everyones heads. So usually what I like to do is find a location then work around that. Finding a good location is my favorite thing everrrr.
L: If you could shoot anyone living or dead, who would it be?
AA: The worlds current obsession is my obsession too: Cara Delevingne
she’s so perfect I just love her, every time I see a new spread or ad with her in it I freak out and hopeee that one day soon I can shoot her
L: Chocolate milk or soda?
AA: Dr. Pepper over anything
L: Favorite band or dream musician to shoot? Why?
AA: Sky Ferreira. She’s so perfect. I feel like her and I would work so well together, we have similar styles in different ways. (if that even makes sense)
L: Have you ever looked back on a shoot and wondered if you would do things differently?
AA: Oh my god all the time, it’s like a sickness. I’ll stay up all night and analyze old photos, figure out what I can improve on and what I liked about it.
L: I’m such a big fan of your work, what can we expect from you next?
AA: eeek thank you! I actually have 3 shoots planned in the next two weeks so keep posted and you’ll find a bunch a new shit
L: What’s your favorite decade?
AA: The 90’s. 100% the 90’s. I feel so bad for everyone that didn’t get to experience the rawness of that decade.
L: Do you have any questions for me?
AA: I could ask you 100, but I’ll keep it at 1. I’m a biiig fan of your blog, totally lurk it for inspiration before shoots, what made you want to start such a blog?
L: Oh man, it seems like ages ago I started it, it’s almost hard to remember a time when I didn’t have one. I was living in NYC and I was addicted to magazines, my friends just said “Why don’t you start your own blog?”. So, here I am 4 years later still at it.
Thanks Amber!
